Taylor County has agreed to allow Bug Tussel to utilize an additional $5 million of the county’s borrowing capacity to expand high-speed internet access to rural areas. Bug Tussel is building 18 communication towers, with three already operational and the rest expected to be live by the end of the year, which will greatly enhance internet availability. The additional borrowing capacity is needed to match payments for securing a share of $1.2 billion in federal grant funding for extending fiber to homes. Although Supervisor Darrell Thompson raised concerns about the potential risk, Broadband Chairman Mike Bub assured that the risk is minimized and the county’s investment does not involve tax dollars. The resolution was approved to ensure the county can qualify for grant funds before the upcoming deadline.
