Bug Tussel Brings 20 New Miles High-Speed Fiber Internet to Jefferson County
JEFFERSON, Wis. (July 31, 2025) – Nearly 20 miles of Bug Tussel fiber optic cable are now live in Jefferson County, bringing high-speed internet service of up to 2 Gbps to nearly 200 homes and businesses in the townships of Rome and Sullivan.
This new infrastructure connects with 30 miles of existing fiber serving areas near Whitewater, Palmyra, Hebron, and Jefferson, creating an expanding network of connectivity across the county.
Expanding Coverage Countywide
The Rome and Sullivan deployment is part of a larger initiative to build fiber infrastructure throughout Jefferson County. Roughly 90 additional miles are expected to go live within the next year, while the complete project will ultimately reach over 150 miles serving nearly 2,000 locations countywide.
Jefferson County and Bug Tussel developed this fiber project in partnership to expand broadband access to underserved areas. The network is designed as a fiber backbone that will serve as the foundation for future expansion, including planned last-mile projects in the Young Prairie area and other locations.
“The partnership with Jefferson County and Bug Tussel is delivering real results for our residents,” said Scott Feldt, Executive Director of Public Affairs. “We’re bridging the digital divide one community at a time, ensuring that rural Jefferson County has access to the same internet speeds as urban areas.”
Service During Construction
While fiber construction continues, Bug Tussel is installing fixed wireless service at select county locations to provide Jefferson County residents with internet access as an immediate solution.
Network Route
The new fiber travels north from Hagedorn Road along County Highway D, east along County Highway Y to Rome, then north on County Highway P and east on US Highway 18 toward Sullivan. The route continues north and then west along Bakertown Drive before turning north again on County Highway P.
