Marathon County Fiber Project Reaches Major Milestone with 200+ New Connections
MOSINEE, Wis. (August 4, 2025) – The first 30 miles of a 90-mile fiber expansion project in Mosinee’s Leather Camp forest area are now live, bringing over 200 previously underserved Marathon County locations speeds of up to 2 Gbps. The last-mile fiber-to-the-home project serves as another phase in Bug Tussel and Marathon County’s longstanding broadband expansion project.
The 30-mile second-phase Leather Camp deployment serves residents east of County Road X in Kronenwetter Village and Guenther Township. An additional 60 miles will activate this year, connecting 400 more Kronenwetter and Guenther locations.
“Our partnership with Marathon County has been essential to making this expansion possible. Together, we’re bridging the digital divide and ensuring rural residents have the connectivity they need to thrive,” said Scott Feldt, Executive Director of Public Affairs at Bug Tussel.
The first phase of Bug Tussel’s partnership with Marathon County has brought over 100 miles of backbone middle-mile fiber to 1,000 Marathon County locations to date. The project is ongoing, with construction on another 70 miles currently underway. Bug Tussel anticipates the completed first-phase fiber backbone to reach approximately 1,500 total locations, extending into the Village of Maine and Townships of Bern, Johnson, Halsey, Hamburg, Weston, Easton, Texas, Holton, Frankfort, and Berlin.
This expanded connectivity transforms daily life for rural residents, enabling reliable work-from-home capabilities, seamless 4K streaming, and robust support for home-based businesses. Bug Tussel has also deployed county-wide fixed wireless service across 16 towers to provide swift internet access during fiber construction.
